Cowbells Before Swine
Jon: I started your cowbell CD.
Sis: YOU DID?
Jon: Yup. I got the non-rock half done. All I can tell you is that Sisqo’s “It’s getting hot in here” is not on there.
Sis: What is that?
Jon: You know: “It’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes (I am. Get ing so hot. I wanna take my clothes off.)”
Sis: That’s Nelly. And I don’t think that there’s any cowbell in that.
Jon: Oh yes there is. I’ve become a cowbell connoisseur over the last month. There is blatant cowbell in there.
Sis: Oh now I’m going to check.
Jon: How?
Sis: I love Nelly.
Jon: What?
Sis: I have all of his albums. [rambles off some titles]
Jon: Wow. I had no idea.
[Nelly comes on in the background]
Jon: See? Cowbell. Plain as day.
Sis: That’s not a cowbell.
Jon: Are you kidding?
Sis: It’s too low.
Jon: What??
Sis: It’s a trash can lid or something.
[silence]
Jon: I don’t think you even know what a cowbell sounds like.
Sis: I do.
Jon: I don’t think so. You thought a perfectly perceptible cowbell was a trash can lid.
Sis: I do.
Jon: This CD set is wasted on you. I’m trashing it.
Sis: No no no!
Jon: Fine. But I’m now filling it with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Sis: Nooooo!

wow, did you record that conversation? can anyone out there back me up about the cow bell? i always think of a cow bell being more high pitched. but i guess they come in many tones. or perhaps they are playing the cowbell while holding it in their hand which will muffle the sound a bit. i think that’s it! ok, so my brother the cowbell expert was right again. now i like nelly even MORE because he has cowbell in his song. that should be a selling point. nelly could be the cowbell spokesperson bringing the cowbell to the people. they’ll never go back. and please no lynyrd skynyrd.

As someone who can listen to the 20 minute “freebird” solo for the 7 billionth time and still want to play air guitar, I can tell you that Skynyrd is fine. So is Nazareth. And Mountain. And all those bands that have graced people’s cowbell compilations over the last 30+ years.
This cowbell compilation was requested by my sister who appreciates oddities and the finer points of Nelly. And it’s being made by her brother who always does things the hard way.

give her a copy of PAINKILLER (J.Zorn, Mick Harris and Bill Laswell) she’ll love it just as much as Nelli. The crap people are subjected to is terrible to say the least. TURN OFF MTV TURN OFF your crappy Z101 fm and listen to some new shit. “where?” you say. Jon has like 2000 cd’s and a pluthera of mp3’s to boot that most of you have never even heard of. I’d say pay the shipping and 2 bucks and have the kid burn ya somethin’ to chew on and you can stop listening to your L. skynerds and Nelly retardo’s. love and kisses.
