Essential Free Software?

The time I was supposed to spend finishing up my PC was spent with the PS2. So, before I finalize the PC, does anyone have any free software recommendations? Thunderbird, Opera, Perl, mediamonkey, audacity, trillian, VirusScan, Notepad++, cdex, dvd decrypter, Picasa, Adaware, Spybot, Disk investigator, PC Inspector, PSTools, Process Explorer, TweakUI, ASpell, Wink, a couple of firewalls, and some other apps are already on the list, but do you have any free software that you consider essential?

I’ll link and explain all the stuff that I use once my eyes can focus.

i just started using thunderbird at work b/c i hate eudora. if i had to ask my computer “what the fuck?” (sorry mom) one more time i was going to freak. so my open-source software friend recommended thunderbird. apparently you can customize it to do whatever you want. i just don’t want it to freeze and so far it hasn’t. it’s still full of spam, but supposedly there are filters for that. what the heck are all those other programs. i can’t wait to read about what you choose. gooooooooo non-microsoft!!

putty (if you use ssh), pan (newsreader), gaim for instant messaging (i know you have trillian up there), fsraid for those parity files off the newsgroups, dosbox for all your dos emulation needs, cerberus ftp server if you need one… i guess thats it. hope your comments allow html ;P

I use Thunderbird for all my personal email - it’s great cuz I can set up my various aliases and email accounts to funnel in. There’s probably lots of ways to do that, but then I’m fairly retarded - so there you go. I’ll be interested in seeing what others find essential.

for those who think MD5 has seen its best days gone by. Or if there are a few too many black helicopters circling overhead.
    And there’s even

if you are feeling like spending way too much quality time with the new pet and away from the PS2. I mean #1GF.
Break the ties at the root. Windows has to go.
And the only time I can recall “finalizing” a machine involved a double bitter axe.
Guess which OS it was running.
